Physician Resources
Domestic Violence
The SFMS Community Service Foundation provided funds for the
development of the first SFMS guidelines on domestic violence screening
and intervention. This brochure represents a concise and clinically
based approach to this complex issue, distilljng knowledge from
existing, longer documents. The brochure has been widely distributed and
well received by clinicians citywide and beyond, and it was cited in the
Journal of the American Medical Association as one of the best such
resources. Printing for the first version was kindly underwritten by
Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories.

Emergency Preparedness
In 2008, the SFMS dedicated an issue of San Francisco Medicine to
emergency preparedness in San Francisco. Click here to find out what every physician should
know.
Improving Palliative Care: A Community-Wide Initiative
The SFMS and Sutter Health Institute for Research and Education have
a community-wide initiative to improve palliative care. Click here to download a PDF about this
initiative.
Click here to read about a recent meeting of
physician champions on opportunities to increase utilization of
Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST). More information
on this effort is forthcoming and we welcome participation by physicians
and other clinicians in our initiative. For more information,
contact Jeffrey Newman, MD, NewmanJM@sutterhealth.org or
Steve Heilig at the SFMS, heilig@sfms.org.
Medical Leadership Council on Cultural Proficiency
The Medical Leadership Council on Cultural Proficiency (MLC) has
developed a website to be used by all MLC members and others interested
in the issues of cultural proficiency, language access, and the health
care workforce. SFMS is an active member of the thirty-three-member
Council and is pleased to link the MLC website to our own. MedicalLeadership.org has been designed to allow
easy access to information for participating organizations, their
members, and other health care professionals.
On the site you will find:
- Information about the MLC: Member organizations, participation
agreements, and policies
- News and information: MLC reports, meeting summaries, and an
events calendar
- Educational tools: CME courses, tools, and patient education
materials
- Resource center
- Language Access Database, MLC presentations, and links
The Language Access Database is a county-by-county database providing
information on interpretation and translation services, patient
education materials in languages other than English, and community
resources for patients. The database is updated regularly, and listings
may be sent to the CAFP for inclusion.
It includes:
- Interpretation resources by phone, VMI, or onsite
- Language lines
- Community resources
- Interpretation equipment
- Training for physicians and staff members
- Websites in languages other than English
